How do I make sure drivers see me?
Wear retroreflective material on the parts of you that move, and carry a light. Fluorescent colours help in daylight and dusk; after dark they do almost nothing.

What to do
- Put retroreflective material on the joints that move — ankles and wrists at minimum, knees and elbows if you have them. Marking the moveable joints in a pattern that conveys human motion is the configuration researchers found road workers were recognised at roughly three times the distance of a standard reflective vest alone.
- Carry or wear a light as well as retroreflective material. Retroreflection returns light to its source, so it does nothing until headlights are pointed at you — which is not true on bends, at junctions, or from the side.
- Add a red rear light if you run on roads. Being seen from behind is where the reflective-only setup fails first.
- Make eye contact with drivers where you can, and wait for a clear, complete stop before crossing. NHTSA’s instruction to pedestrians is not to rely on others to keep you safe.
- Treat dusk as the highest-risk light, not full darkness. Drivers have not switched on their attention yet, and often not their headlights either.
- A driver looks straight at you and pulls out anyway — assume you were not seen, every time.
- Your route has no footpath and no verge in the dark.
- Fog, heavy rain or road spray, on a road without a separated path.
- Your light dies mid-run and you are on a road section.
Why
The core problem of running visibility is a perceptual trick: you can always see yourself. Your own clothing is well lit by your own attention, so it never feels like a question. From a windscreen at 40 mph, through rain, with oncoming headlights, you may not exist at all.
Two different technologies for two different times of day
- Fluorescence — the aggressive yellows, oranges and pinks — converts ultraviolet light into visible light. It is outstanding in daylight and dusk, and essentially inert after dark, because there is no UV to convert.
- Retroreflection — the grey-looking strips that flare white in headlights — returns light directly to its source. It is the one that works at night, and only when a light is pointed at you.
The failure mode is buying a bright jacket, feeling covered, and running at 6 a.m. in December in something that stopped working when the sun went down.
Movement is the signal
Drivers do not consciously identify a runner. They recognise a pattern, and human vision is unusually sensitive to the pattern of a moving body — the alternating swing of ankles and wrists. Retroreflective material placed on those joints produces that signature at a distance where a torso patch is still an ambiguous smudge. This is the part of the page with real evidence behind it: road workers marked this way were recognised at roughly three times the distance of a standard vest.
The caveat we owe you: that research was done on road workers and on cyclists, not on runners. We think it transfers, because what it measures is how human vision responds to a moving body rather than anything about the job. But it is an inference, and you should know it is one.
Being seen is not the same as being safe
A driver who has seen you may still turn across you. Visibility buys you a better chance, not right of way — which is why it belongs alongside how you actually behave around traffic rather than instead of it.

Is a bright jacket enough at night?
No. Fluorescent colour works by re-emitting ultraviolet light, which is abundant in daylight and almost absent after dark. What works at night is retroreflection, which returns headlight beams to their source. Many jackets do both, but the bright colour is doing the daytime job and the reflective strips are doing the night one.
Where should reflective material go?
On the joints that move — ankles first, then wrists, knees and elbows. This is the best-evidenced claim on the page: in a study of night-time conspicuity, road workers wearing retroreflective strips arranged to convey human motion were recognised at about three times the distance of those in a standard reflective vest. The research is on road workers and cyclists rather than runners, but the mechanism it tests — that we are unusually good at recognising the pattern of a moving human — does not depend on why the person is out there.
Do I need a light if the street is lit?
Street lighting helps you see the ground; it does far less for how you appear against a lit background. A light also covers the situations where headlights never point at you at all — junctions, roundabouts and cars turning across your path.
Is dusk really worse than night?
It is the hardest light for the human eye, which is transitioning between day and night vision. Add drivers who have not yet turned on headlights and runners who have not yet put on reflective gear, and dusk earns more caution than most people give it.
