Enter a distance and a goal time and this gives you the pace it needs — per mile and per kilometre — with the checkpoints you’ll pass on the way.

How to use it

Pace is time per unit of distance, so a goal time and a distance fully determine it. What the number does not tell you is whether you can hold it — that is what a recent race result and an honest look at your training are for.

If you already know the pace and want the finish time, enter the distance and adjust the goal until the pace matches. The relationship works in both directions.

Common questions

What pace do I need for a sub-2 half marathon?

9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per kilometre, held evenly. Halfway falls at 1:00:00.

Should I aim for even splits?

For most runners and most races, yes. Even pacing is the simplest way to run your best time. A negative split of one to two percent costs a few seconds early and reduces the chance of fading badly in the last quarter.

How we calculate

Race distances are exact: a marathon is 42,195 metres and a half marathon 21,097.5 metres, not 26.2 and 13.1 miles. Miles use the international mile of exactly 1609.344 metres.

Values are computed at full precision and rounded once, for display. Cumulative times are never built by adding rounded splits — a marathon is twenty-seven mile segments, so that can drift by up to thirteen and a half seconds, which is exactly the error that makes a split table untrustworthy.
