The last segment is the genuine remainder, not a rounded one — a marathon’s final piece is 0.2188 of a mile. Cumulative times are computed from the start each time rather than by adding rounded splits, which would drift by up to thirteen seconds across a marathon.

How to use it
A finish time is a promise about the whole distance. Splits are what that promise costs at each mile — and seeing them written down is usually the moment a goal becomes either obviously achievable or obviously ambitious.
Take the pace band with you. Paper on a wrist still beats a watch you have to interpret while breathing hard.

What is a pace band?
A printed strip of cumulative split times you wear on your wrist during a race, so you can check whether you are on schedule without doing arithmetic at mile nineteen.
How we calculate
Splits are computed from a single elapsed-time function, so the split table and the checkpoint list can never disagree. The final split of a race is the genuine remainder — a marathon’s last segment is 0.2188 of a mile, not a rounded fifth.
Negative-split plans hold a constant pace either side of halfway, with the second half faster by the percentage you choose. Total time is preserved exactly.
